PS5 Review: Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition

Death rises once more in this PS5 upgrade…

Back in 2012, I reviewed the original Darksiders II for Xbox 360 and while I still preferred character War over Death, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I did play the PS4 remasters for both games, but now a PS5 upgraded version of the Darksiders II is now live…

The Deathinitive Edition (love these puns, by the way) already had a ton of content, included all past DLC and QoL changes alongside upgraded visuals. The PS5 upgrade takes this and runs with it by adding in 4K, Ray-tracing, faster loading times and haptic feedback through the DualSense controller. If you already have the PS4 version of the Deathinitive Edition, you will be entitled to the upgrade for free! Which is something that I wasn’t expecting considering the length of time since it launched back in 2015…

The game you all know and love is still here, it just looks and performs the best it ever has. I would really like it if THQ Nordic would give the original game the same treatment…*hint hint*, the haptic feedback is handled well and adds to the overall immersion.

The 4K upgrade is a welcome one and with 60 FPS too without any drops in performance. It’s buttery smooth from start to finish, while the soundtrack is still as epic as it ever was.

The Verdict

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition for PS5 definitely lives up to its name. It looks the best it ever has, runs smoothly and adds haptic feedback all for no extra cost to original owners. If you haven’t played a Darksiders game before, then you deserve to treat yourself to a slice of Death…
