PS5 Review: Caligo

Is this walking sim a nightmare or an adventure?

Caligo is the darkness everyone descends into one way or another, and to each of us it’s something different. For some it’s a short but exciting adventure, some will see it as a place to relax. Yet others will be reminded of their worst nightmare, while for a few, it might come as a revelation.

Caligo is a strange game. It’s very short, around an hour and it’s a typical walking sim with only one choice you make at the end, but you can just load up the chapter after the credits have rolled for the other ending. You play as someone who doesn’t remember who they are at first and are guided by a suspicious voice as you try and uncover your memories through a charming forest, before descending into prison and a battlefield.

I did enjoy the story, and the voice acting is impressive. I would have liked the game to be a bit longer as I feel it ends fairly abruptly, but it was a decent experience overall. It also has a very easy Platinum trophy for trophy hunters.

The visuals look dated, but I discovered the original game came out on PC back in 2017. So, it’s good by those standards but I do wonder why it has taken all this time for a console release. It handles well with no framerate issues or glitches.

The Verdict

Caligo is a very short walking sim, but one that will definitely stick in my mind for a while. It is strange from beginning to end and has an easy Platinum to obtain.

Score: 7.0
