Can this be more Solid than Hollow Knight?
A 2D video game that combines platforming and action with a touch of exploration in which we control Morkull, God of death and darkness and lord of the Ragast, whose main mechanics lies in the breaking of the fourth wall, which will allow Morkull to communicate with the player in various ways.
Metroidvania games are nothing new as we know. Morkull tries to emulate more modern Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight, but can he break the fourth wall enough to give it a run for its money?
There is a good sense of humour to be found here, even if there are a few spelling/grammatical errors to be found in the in-game text, but that’s a small thing to nitpick about. The game itself handles well, but it does feel unpolished and unfinished in this final form. It feels like it could have done with a few more months in development to iron out the kinks.
It’s annoying for me to be cruel to a game, especially from a new developer and this is their debut game. I can see the potential for both based on what I’ve seen, but like I said I think if they spent a bit longer on developing, then it would have fared much better. The game has unfair difficulty spikes scattered throughout and combat can be glitchy at times too.
I do like the hand-drawn art style though, I was impressed with that. The framerate seems consistent and the soundtrack is decent overall.
The Verdict
Morkull: Ragast’s Rage tries really hard to fit into a genre that is already bursting to the seams with great entries like Hollow Knight. It ultimately feels unfinished, buggy and unfair at times. It’s not a terrible attempt from this new developer, it just needed longer in the oven.
