Are these batch of original Tomb Raider games worth digging for?
Her legacy lives on! Play the next series of Tomb Raider adventures in this remastered collection of the Darkness Trilogy.
Last year saw the release of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, which I reviewed and had a great time with, even if the mechanics haven’t aged particularly well, I found that Aspyr had done a good job in trying to trying to make the game more accessible with Quality of Life changes alongside it’s spruced up visuals. I did wonder if they would release the remaining Tomb Raider PS1 games, but I didn’t think they would actually go so far as to release both of them and the black sheep of the franchise “The Angel of Darkness” as a collection.
Aspyr have done just as good of a job with the IV-VI games as they did with I-III, I even found myself warming slightly to the last game, which was panned originally when it released. It wouldn’t be until Tomb Raider Legend that the series started to pull itself back together.
IV-VI Remastered contains Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles and the aforementioned Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Each has a nice boost to its visuals and the quality of life changes are definitely welcome.
The modern control scheme is a nice upgrade too, though entirely optional for those who want the classic experience. While these latter Tomb Raider games aren’t as strong as the original trilogy of games, they still have their moments. Yes, the games still have not aged as gracefully as most, but they are still enjoyable.
The Verdict
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is yet another noble attempt by Aspyr to bring classic games to a modern audience, while making it more accessible to them as well. It’s not a as strong a collection as Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, but it’s still impressive overall.
