PS5 Review: Turbo Overkill

Syn City?

Johnny Turbo needs to clean up Paradise, a cyber city overrun by augmented minions under the cult control of the world’s most advanced AI, Syn, who’s looking to expand to world domination if not stopped here and now. Wall-running, Hero-Time, chain saw leg augments, flying cars and lots of booms.

Turbo Overkill is a love letter to old school shooters like DOOM and Duke Nukem with it’s fast-paced, high octane madness where you run-and-gun, but also slide with a chainsaw leg to kill dozens of enemies at a time, as well as more traditional shooter mechanics like wall-running.

The game is a set in a cyberpunk-style city and there’s plenty of cheesy one-liners and dialogue, so it’s very much a nod to the Duke in this regard. The game handles well with precise controls, the shooting feels satisfying as does the chainsaw leg sliding.

The level structure is similar to DOOM with finding the right path to end the level, while finding keys to access doors and so on. It can be a bit of a maze, but its designed to be and it does feel authentic to old-school shooters in this way. The performance itself does very well with a solid framerate, a nice retro-style art style and a pretty epic soundtrack to boot. I also didn’t experience any glitches during my playthrough.

The Verdict

Turbo Overkill does exactly what you would want from an old-school shooter. It leans heavily on it, but does add in its own personal touch. If you are looking to scratch that particular itch for a retro FPS, this is the answer.
